Common Threads

Kate bought “Let My People Go Surfing” for me a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed reading it (even if the tone can be a bit insufferable at times). Not surprisingly, the theme of conservation/efficiency is pervasive and impactful. Hard to believe some people view it as the domain of “hippies” and “democrats” rather than good business.

On a more personal note, those that know me have seen my consumerism tendencies; they’re quite strong. However, over the past few years I’ve been trying to do a much better job of fixing items that have life left in them, buying fewer, better quality goods and paying a premium for more sustainable things. I know it’s not much, but I took the Common Threads pledge on Patagonia and encourage you to do the same.

For what it’s worth, for those asking if this is just marketing are both blind and missing the point. Of course it’s marketing. Great marketing. But the point remains, we should buy less, use longer and recycle more. Patagonia has been at the forefront of good corporate stewardship and this is just a part of that leadership position.
