Things I Love Today
Guess who’s back? Time to get things cranking, I can’t tell you how good it feels to be in 2012. 2011 was such an amazing year. Highlighted by the biggest day in my life thus far - tying the knot with KCV. Lucky me. I have lots to be thankful for and I plan on busting my ass again this year to keep it going. Onto the list:
Learning to cook (stressful night the other night but managed...

BRYCE DOT VC: Here Come The Tweens →
brycedotvc:
Over the holidays I had a chance to spend lots of time with my two oldest daughters. They’re in that awkward phase of life where they’re not really little kids anymore, but they aren’t adults, or even teenagers yet either. It’s a phase marketers have come to call “tweens”.
Wedged between these…

Hunter Walk on MBAs →
Hunter’s post does a great job explaining the subtle difference between “getting an MBA” and “being an MBA” that often leaves myself and the general public dropping 4 letter words when they meet people who “are MBAs.”
His post says it far better than I can but I’ve always thought about it in terms of humility, people, and intellectual curiosity:

Powering down
I’m headed off on my honeymoon for the nest 10 days and will be “powering down” my online access. No email, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. I’m really looking forward to this and expect that I’ll come back refreshed and hopefully with some new thoughts brimming in my head and new perspectives from a visit to nre countries and cities.
Have a great holiday season everyone.

This is a hell of an idea. Someone should do it with all the menswear startups out there.
Agreed. Pretty cool intersection of e-commerce and brick+mortar.

Things I Love Today
It’s Friday so that means time for me to ramble on about everything that I’m feeling this week. Feels like this was one hell of a week too. I no particular order:
Emergen-C I’m not sure what I would do without it
Making new connections and reconnecting with old ones
The new beer garden in Hayes Valley
The luxury of having a little bit of time to sit around and just think

Stepping up Google Music's social game
After (finally) uploading my music to Google Music I’ve been the service fairly extensively over the past couple of days. I’m using it mostly on my phone (old Nexus One) and while at school in the computer labs. At home I guess I’m a creature to habit and either default to iTunes or to ex.fm and soundcloud.
I won’t dig into the major pros and cons of Google Music as there...

Things I Love Today
Hola interwebs. Apologies for the two week hiatus. I thought for Turkey Day that giving thanks off-line with my family (including @kcv and her family) was more important than Tumbln and last week…well last week I’ve got no excuse. So anyway…in no particular order:
Dogsitting this fearsome beast
Early season snow in VT
My upcoming “Luna de miel”

Tiny data point...
But it’s early December and we haven’t had to turn on the heat yet in our apartment in Philly. I’m not saying that’s proof of global warming but it sure isn’t the norm. I’m ready for some Winter up in this!
Although maybe someone is trying to tell me to fire up the BBQ this weekend. Hmm…

BRYCE DOT VC: Capturing More Value Than You Create →
brycedotvc:
I didn’t get upgraded on my flight home from NYC tonight.
That’s not so unusual. I only get upgraded about 50% of the time. As I schleped it to my coach seat there was nothing too out of the ordinary save for a couple dilapidated seats with tray tables being held up by duct tape and one…

Common Threads →
Kate bought “Let My People Go Surfing” for me a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed reading it (even if the tone can be a bit insufferable at times). Not surprisingly, the theme of conservation/efficiency is pervasive and impactful. Hard to believe some people view it as the domain of “hippies” and “democrats” rather than good business.
On a more personal...

War Chests at the Ready
Not a day goes by without announcements for all sorts of funding along the e-commerce spectrum. Demand side, distribution, etc. are all getting funded and personally I find it incredibly exciting. I’m working to distill my thoughts into a richer investment thesis (I’ll post for feedback) but in the meantime I wanted to reflect on the potential for even greater consolidation in the...

Comments from my mom on my blog. Boomski
Fall weather (Crisp)
30th Birthday parties. Lots of nervous energy

Going after big problems
I’m sure many of you read the recent article on Google X in the NYTimes. Putting aside whether or not you think that Google should invest in projects like the ones mentioned in the article (I’m a believer) there is a larger phenomenon that I think is worth calling out: Going after big problems.
Beyond the noble and inspiring qualities of tackling issues like how to build an elevator...

Work Fast, Change Speeds, Change Location
“Work Fast, Change Speeds, Change Location” - Geoffrey J Vitt
When I thought I had a big league future ahead of me in Little League this was the maxim my father repeated over and over. The idea (and I believe he attributed it to the Baltimore Orioles pitching coach during the Jim Palmer era) is that to be a successful pitcher all you need is to keep a nice steady pace (keeps the...

NYTimes on "The Crisis" →
Hot damn I love this article. I think it very nicely sums up a lot of the optimism that I feel but had been unable to articulate. This quote kills me:
If you’re stuck in the old paradigm, these developments could seem like a crisis. You might fret that no one is reading encyclopedias anymore. Or that these kids who resist newspapers are so ignorant. Or that your nation used to lead from the front...

Blogging on Craveworthy.com
My friend @jeffreyiacono asked me to blog on his new site, Craveworthy, and my first post on Dropbox is up here.
The general idea of Craveworthy is to share and review things that are exciting in our professional lives. Or as they say elsewhere on the site, it’s as if Linkedin and Thrillist had a baby.
Check it out.

Problem Solver - The Barometer Story
This is an often repeated story, but one worth re-posting. To me, this story demonstrates the best type of problem solving. Simple. Powerful. Ingenuous. I try to remind myself of this story when I’m stuck on a problem.
It’s also a great example of sticking it to the man, and of the believers vs non-believers that Bijan and others have posted about. Are you going to be stuck in the rut...

Focus
If you chase two rabbits, both with escape. -Anonymous
OK, excuse the dorky quote but it’s true. “Focus. Focus. Focus.” Parents, coaches, friends, and advisers have shared this bit of wisdom with me from my childhood through high-school, college, work and now business school. Not surprisingly, it’s an effective tactic that’s served me well and I’ve been...

bijan sabet: Some thoughts about Siri →
bijan:
One of the most interesting things about my new iPhone 4S is Siri
After a week or so of playing with Siri, here’s are my quick observations:
1. Siri is fun. Siri has personality. It’s not just speech recognition. She has attitude and her own voice.
2. Siri plus geofencing is killer….
Now this gets me excited
